Editorial and Character Portraits

    Editorial and character portraits

Some people are best photographed where they belong. The athlete at the training ground. The craftsman in the workshop. The local identity who has seen the Gold Coast change around them. An editorial portrait tells you who someone is before you know their name.

We photograph athletes and sporting identities, local public figures, elders and storytellers, and anyone who wants a portrait with the depth and presence of a magazine feature. We also create fine art concept portraits, where the idea comes first and the portrait is built around it.

    Studio or location

Most editorial portraits are made on location, in the places that tell the subject's story, with portable lighting to give them the finish of a studio portrait. For concept portraits and personal editorial sittings, the studio gives us complete control over light, background and mood.

    The session

It starts with a design consultation, where we learn about the person, their story and where the portrait will be displayed or published. From there, we develop the concept: the setting, the light, the wardrobe and the props that bring it together.

On the day, Paul directs everything, from the lighting to the smallest gesture, so the subject can simply be themselves.

After the session, you return for your ordering appointment, see your portraits projected large, and choose your favourites.

    Finished artwork

Editorial portraits are made for large framed pieces and canvases, with presence on a wall in a home, an office or a clubhouse. A custom album suits a series, such as a portrait story of a family elder or a sporting career.

    Common questions

Can I commission a portrait of someone else?

Yes. Many editorial portraits are commissioned by family, a club or an organisation. The person organising and paying for the session is the client, and we'll work with you on every detail.

Can the portrait be taken at the subject's home or workplace?

Yes. Location portraits often work best in the places that mean the most to the subject.

What is a fine art concept portrait?

A portrait built around an idea, with set, wardrobe and lighting designed to bring it to life. We develop the concept and walk you through it at your design consultation.
